History of World Hunger Day

World Hunger Day, observed annually on May 28th, was launched in 2011 to raise awareness and call attention to the global food crisis. With nearly 343 million people across 74 countries experiencing acute food insecurity, World Hunger Day calls for urgent global action to address the root causes of hunger, including poverty, inequality, and climate change. It is a day to reflect on the state of global food security and amplify the voices of those working to solve these critical issues.

In 2025, World Hunger Day is centered around the theme of “Sowing Resilience.” This theme focuses on the interconnectivity between hunger and climate change and the impact we can have when we invest in farmers and create more resilient food systems. Read more here.

The Importance of World Hunger Day

World Hunger Day is an essential time for organizations and individuals to reflect on their role in addressing hunger and food insecurity both around the world, and in our local communities. It provides an opportunity to highlight and celebrate programs that make a real difference in fighting hunger, while encouraging improvement and further growth in these areas.

In alignment with this year’s theme, World Hunger Day serves as a reminder to renew our commitment to supporting local farmers, exploring climate-smart agriculture and empowering women farmers, who produce 80% of the food in many developing countries.

Program Ideas

World Hunger Day offers endless opportunities for creative programming, from supporting food banks to raising awareness about sustainable agriculture practices. To make your World Hunger Day celebration more impactful, tailor your initiatives to fit the unique context of your organization, industry, and region. By aligning your efforts with your company’s mission and values, you’ll drive engagement and create a compelling, clear narrative for both your team and customers.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Education & Skill Building

Understanding the root causes of hunger is the first step toward creating change. Educate yourself on the underlying causes of hunger, the regions most affected by food insecurity, and the far-reaching impact of food insecurity on communities. Then share your findings with your teams. Some ideas include:

  • Host a virtual panel discussion or roundtable with experts in the field of hunger relief to educate employees about the causes and solutions surrounding food insecurity.
  • Share data, or host a workshop on food insecurity in your local community and recommend actions that individuals can take to be a part of the solution.
  • Use your company’s social media platforms to share educational content, employee stories, and hunger relief initiatives. Encourage employees to join in by sharing their own experiences or actions for World Hunger Day.
  • Integrate educational content into your product or service, offering customers the opportunity to learn about the global hunger crisis and how they can make a difference through their purchases or actions.

Example: In 2019, Pledge 1% member RightRice® launched its impactful "Right Mission" campaign, committing 1% of the company’s equity to No Kid Hungry to accelerate the fight against childhood hunger. This equity pledge not only provided funding to No Kid Hungry but also helped shine a national spotlight on the critical issue of childhood hunger in America. Additionally, they fostered a valuable partnership with the Whole Kids Foundation, amplifying the reach and impact of their shared mission.

Community Impact

  • Launch a company-wide challenge where employees can participate in activities like donating a certain number of meals, volunteering hours, or fundraising for hunger relief efforts.
  • Sponsor or create a community garden where employees and local residents can grow and harvest food that will be donated to hunger relief programs. This initiative not only supports food access but also promotes sustainability and community involvement.
  • Host a fundraising campaign in support of organizations like Feeding America, The World Food Programme, or Action Against Hunger.Consider matching employee donations or setting up a challenge to encourage giving.
  • Partner with local restaurants or food providers to sponsor meal deliveries for homeless shelters, schools, or low-income neighborhoods. Your company could sponsor a certain number of meals to be delivered on World Hunger Day.

Example: Pledge 1% member Procore demonstrated their commitment to ending world hunger at their annual Revenue Summit by organizing an impactful volunteer opportunity for over 700 employees. Partnering with Rise Against Hunger, Procore coordinated a meal packaging event that brought the entire team together for a shared cause.

"Wearing team t-shirts and colorful bandanas, hundreds of employees moved through a buzzing room, working seamlessly to make the greatest impact in a short time. An hour and a half later, the room was filled with smiles and high-fives as we surpassed our goal of packaging 100,000 meals." – Miles Anderson, Senior Manager, Procore.org

Workplace Transformation

  • Challenge employees to take actions in the workplace that reduce food waste, such as reducing portion sizes, rethinking lunch meetings, or using leftovers creatively. Track the progress of the company’s efforts and offer incentives for the team that makes the biggest impact.
  • Introduce a Workplace Sustainability Program by exploring ways the company can adopt a zero-waste or farm-to-table approach in its operations, ultimately supporting both environmental and hunger-related causes.
  • Set up systems to donate surplus or unused food from your workplace (cafeteria, events, etc.) to local food banks or community organizations. Educate employees on how food waste reduction can help address hunger and organize regular collections or donations.

Industry Leadership

  • Lend your team’s time to develop a custom software solution for a nonprofit partner working to end global hunger.
  • Form coalitions within your sector to address hunger and food insecurity.
  • Add an option within your product or service to allow customers to round up their purchase to the nearest dollar, donating the difference to hunger relief organizations. (example from Pledge 1% member Olo)
  • Develop a product model where for every item sold, an equivalent product is donated to hunger relief programs (e.g., a food brand that donates a meal for every purchase made).

Example: Pledge 1% member PhoenixDX, one of Australia's fastest-growing digital innovation companies, built a groundbreaking custom-build application that can eradicate hunger in Malaysia through nonprofit partner, Zer0hunger. PhoenixDX continues to work with Zer0hunger to develop the platform and its application further to fulfill its dream of ending hunger in Malaysia.
