Measuring a 1% pledge when you give time and product instead of money

Founder/CEO, Providus Technologies L.L.C

Hello everyone. I am Mohsin, founder of Providus Technologies. We are a Salesforce partner with teams in Dubai and Karachi, and most of our nonprofit work is with organisations in the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia. We build and run their Salesforce and the systems around it.

We are new to Pledge 1%. Our 1% will be product and engineering time rather than equity or profit. That is what we actually have to give, and nonprofit technology is work we already do every day.

Here is where I am stuck. Money is simple to report. You gave an amount, it went somewhere, you can show it. Time and product are harder. If we give a few hundred engineering hours a year, what did that actually change for the organisations we gave them to? Hours given is an input, not an outcome.

Two questions for anyone who has been doing this longer than us.

  1. How do you record and report a product or time pledge so it holds up in front of a board or an auditor?
  2. Has anyone found a way to measure the outcome and not just the input? Even a rough method would help.

One thing I can offer back. A lot of nonprofits get their free Salesforce licences and then get stuck, because the licences are the easy part and the setup is not. If any member organisation is sitting on a Nonprofit Cloud setup that never got finished, send me a message. I will look at it and tell you honestly what it needs, at no charge and with no pitch attached.

And if there are other members from Pakistan or the Gulf here, I would like to say hello. The region looks thin in the network.

Thanks,
Mohsin
