Adapting your approach to impact conversations in the workplace makes a difference. Yes, you can “talk” about return, about extending a picture beyond your balance sheet and/or GDP that depicts a more complete view of what’s going on. You can talk of business opportunities, or the dangers of inaction, of taxes and pollution fees...
BUT: As Professor Rebecca Henderson puts it: "one of the best ways to maximize profits is to care about more than maximizing profits". My social impact tip is to reframe your thinking: Sustainability and Happiness are not at the expense of profit but a MEANS to it. Profit is a RESULT. There is a better way to do business, there is a better way to operate as species in big numbers.
We really are entering in the Age of Purpose, the question is: do you want to be part of it?
