Our volunteer employee resource group sent a survey to the senior leaders in the organization, asking why our company gives and what we hope to accomplish with our giving. We used their responses to develop a philanthropic call to action / statement, and built out a rubric to assess potential nonprofits. From there, employees submit suggestions of orgs we can support, the ERG applies the rubric, and if it passes a certain score, it gets added to the list of nonprofits we support as a company. It's really helped to align everyone about the why and the what behind our giving.

One question I hear often is: How do we vet the nonprofits to support?

So I'm curious to hear from members within Pledge 1% network - how has your organization vetted/selected your supported nonprofit organizations? Do you work with any third party organizations, (i.e. Techsoup) to help? What best practices can we crowd source as a community to help organizations who are just getting started with their social impact program?

Up to now it has been our CEO deciding where the money goes to. In the last two givings we presented a few options and he chose. In the future we expect to have an internal majority voting process set up. Maybe even using cobudget.co.

Hi Jan

We vet not-for-profits that we support in two main ways:

- Engage in discussions with the partnership managers (for larger charities) or CEOs/founders (for smaller charities). This allows us to get an understanding of the work these organisations do, learn how our funds will be used, and explore other ways we can help these organisations (e.g. with pro bono support).

- Support charities already vetted by other organisations, e.g. The Funding Network Australia (charities have to go through a detailed application process and get assessed by an experienced panel before they are put forward to pitch their projects at TFN crowd funding events), and The Life You Can Save (which curates a list of recommended charities overseen by a panel of experts, which you can donate to directly or via their website).

Regards

Mangala

I think is important that it surfaces from within. What is your core as organisation, where can support your core, skills on a local and ecological level?

Also you may want to glance this project entry if sparks some ideas how to bucket and measure efforts for IMPACT: https://community.pledge1percent.org/t5/Member-Projects/GetAgile-Writes-the-Book-for-Social-Impact-Measurement/ba-p/17418
